Training and Standards

Training, assignment instructions and operational standards for waking watch, fire watch and security personnel.

Overview

Training and Standards, planned around the premises.

Training must be relevant to the duties an individual is expected to perform. Each assignment also requires site-specific instructions, because general training cannot explain the layout, evacuation arrangements or escalation contacts for a particular building.

For clients assessing how personnel will be selected, briefed, supervised and monitored during an assignment.

Every enquiry starts with the actual building or site. We review the reason for cover, the duties required, proposed staffing, operating hours and the instructions that personnel will need to follow. This avoids treating a temporary fire safety or security assignment as a generic guard booking.

When this service may be considered

  • SIA licensing for licensable security activities
  • Appropriate fire awareness and evacuation training
  • Site induction and assignment-specific briefing
  • First aid, safeguarding or DBS requirements where applicable

These examples are not a substitute for competent assessment. The responsible person and their appointed professionals remain responsible for determining the appropriate fire safety, evacuation or security arrangements for the premises.

Training matched to the assigned role

Personnel should be selected for the duties they are expected to perform. Licensable security activity requires the appropriate current SIA licence, while fire watch and evacuation-related duties require relevant instruction and training within clearly defined operational boundaries.

General training alone cannot explain a particular building. Every assignment also needs site-specific information covering the layout, patrol route, alarm-raising method, evacuation procedure, access restrictions, emergency contacts and reporting requirements.

Additional requirements such as first aid, DBS checks, safeguarding awareness, construction induction or site-specific competence should be identified by the client during mobilisation and verified where they form part of the agreed role.

Briefing, supervision and shift handovers

Before starting, personnel should understand the purpose of the assignment, authorised instructions, limits of responsibility and who can approve changes. A signed or otherwise documented briefing creates a clear reference for the guard, supervisor and client.

Supervision should confirm attendance, presentation, understanding of duties, completion of records and escalation of problems. It also provides a management route when site personnel or client contacts need support outside ordinary office hours.

Handovers connect one shift to the next. Outstanding incidents, inaccessible areas, temporary instructions, keys, equipment issues and expected contractor activity should be explained before responsibility transfers.

Verification, refresher training and improvement

Licences, qualifications and role-specific records should be checked before claims are made or personnel are deployed against a stated requirement. Accreditations displayed on the website should similarly reflect current, verifiable company status.

Refresher training may be required when procedures, client standards or recognised guidance change. A revised site instruction also needs a fresh briefing even when the personnel have worked at the property previously.

Incident reviews, client feedback, spot checks and reporting quality can identify areas for improvement. Training and supervision should respond to evidence from live assignments rather than remain a one-time mobilisation exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about training and standards.

Do security guards require an SIA licence?

Personnel performing licensable private security activity must hold the appropriate current SIA licence for that role.

Is general training enough for a waking watch assignment?

No. Personnel also need current site-specific instructions covering the patrol, alarm raising, escalation and evacuation arrangements.

How are standards monitored after mobilisation?

Supervision, attendance checks, reporting review, client feedback and incident learning can all form part of ongoing oversight.

How quickly can cover be arranged?

Mobilisation depends on location, staffing levels, shift requirements and availability. For urgent requirements, call 0207 118 2477 so the brief can be reviewed immediately.

What information is needed for a quotation?

We normally need the site address, building use, reason for cover, required staffing, shift pattern, proposed start date and any relevant site or evacuation instructions.
