Checks before hot works begin
Confirm that the work is authorised under the site's permit system and that the permit owner has defined the task, location and duration. Identify combustible materials, openings, voids and adjacent spaces that could be affected by sparks or conducted heat. The fire watch should understand the available extinguishers, alarm method, emergency contacts and stop-work authority set by site management.
Inspect the observation position and communication arrangements before work starts. Where the work moves, the permit and watch brief may need updating. Fire watch personnel support the contractor's controls; they do not replace risk assessment, isolation, housekeeping or other precautions required by the permit.
Observation during the work
The watch should remain focused on the defined work and surrounding risk areas, without being allocated conflicting duties. Signs of smoke, fire, uncontrolled sparks or changing conditions must be handled through the agreed stop, warning and escalation procedure. The watch should also know how to summon site management and emergency services if required.
Record the start, pauses, changes in location and completion of active work. If materials, access or site activity changes the risk, the permit owner should reassess the controls. Personnel should not extend the task beyond the agreed area based only on a verbal request from the work team.
Post-work monitoring and handback
Hot works risk may remain after visible activity stops because heat or smouldering material can persist. The permit should specify the observation period and areas to be checked, including adjacent or concealed spaces where relevant. The watch must remain available for the full required period rather than leaving when the contractor packs away.
At handback, record the final checks, time, observations and person accepting completion. Any concern should remain open until it has been investigated through the site's procedure. Retain the fire watch record with the permit and incident documentation required by the contractor or premises management.
